The Organic Content Standard (OCS) is an international, voluntary standard that provides chain of custody verification for materials originating on a farm certified to recognized national organic standards. The standard is used to verify organically grown raw materials from the farm to the final product.
Individual sites are certified by independent, third-party certification bodies using annual audits. Material is tracked from the farm to the final product using Transaction Certificates (TC).
Principles of OCS
The OCS relies on third-party verification to confirm whether a final product contains the accurate amount of a given organically grown material. OCS allows for transparent, consistent and comprehensive independent evaluation and verification of organic material content claims on products. OCS covers the processing, manufacturing, packaging, labelling, trading and distribution of a product that contains at least 5 percent certified ‘organic’ materials. OCS might be used as a business-to-business tool to assure the consumers making an informed decision on their purchase of organic content in the product.
