The editor has recently received many questions from factories regarding the human day verification of Higg FEM, so we have compiled relevant content for everyone's reference.


Cascale and VPM are monitoring the human day allocation for FEM 4.0 validation as part of the validation quality.

Current observation results of VPM

As of now, 49% of completed verifications have been completed within one day;

31% of the validation of one person day facilities should have been for facilities that require expected multi person day validation (such as heavy water users, chemical users, on-site water/wastewater treatment, quantitative indicator validation, etc.).

Higg FEM 4.0 version adopts the core validation method, although the validation protocol does not explicitly prohibit FEM's 1-person day validation, Cascale recommends a 2-person day core validation.


The number of person days required for on-site verification of Higg FEM is influenced by many factors, including production process flow, daily water consumption, whether chemicals are used in the production process, whether there are sewage treatment facilities on site, and dialogue and document review by facility staff. The quotation for person days should focus on the following factors.

1. Does the facility have on-site sewage treatment facilities?

Facilities with on-site process wastewater treatment plants may be fully suitable for wastewater and chemical management departments. Some facilities with small on-site process wastewater treatment plants may require fewer person days.

2. Does the facility have a wet process and use chemicals in the process?

Facilities with wet processes (determined through on-site information and license sections, such as printing, dyeing, or laundry) will use chemicals on site. Enterprises with multiple chemical storage and processing locations within their premises will need more time to evaluate and validate their chemical managementdepartments.

3. Has the facility undergone similar validation?

Familiarity with Higg FEM facilities requires verification that meets their requirements. Determining the accuracy of Level 2 and Level 3 issues may require more dialogue with management and review of documents. Quantitative indicators (such as greenhouse gas emissions, waste generation, water resource utilization, and other environmental impact indicators) should be comprehensively reviewed during each validation period, as they will change year by year.

4. Do we need Higg FEM core validation or infrastructure validation?

The infrastructure does not include the validation of quantitative indicators, and it is expected to require less validation time.

Reference case

Case 1

The main processes of facility A are cutting and sewing. It can sew 50000 products per day and has a washing device and a sewage treatment plant in the same location (processing 1000 liters of sewage per day). This facility is a light water user. It is the first validation and the self-assessment did not reach level 1 for all sections.

Case 2

Facility B is a textile factory. Equipped with spinning, weaving, dyeing, and finishing facilities. It covers an area of 250000 square meters and has installed zero discharge sewage treatment plants, rainwater collection systems, and rooftop solar panels in the same location. The facility has been completing Higg FEM since 2017 and has undergone brand led environmental management capacity building projects in the past. The facility is a heavy water user and requires verification of quantitative indicators.

Case 3

Facility C is a fabric dyeing factory. When reviewing its chemical list, it was found that it used 120 different chemicals. The facility does not have on-site treatment for wastewater, which is treated by an off-site general wastewater treatment plant. This facility is the third time using Higg FEM and has implemented several improvement measures identified in previous evaluations.
