How is the Higg FEM 4.0 score calculated?

Issuing time:2024-05-24 08:30

Higg FEM provides multiple rating outputs for facilities and their stakeholders to understand their performance: total FEM score, partial score, and level achievement. The Higg FEM score aims to drive behavioral change. Assign ratings to certain issues to drive action, decision-making, and practice, resulting in better environmental sustainability outcomes.

How scores are calculated

Higg FEM level improvement method

The Higg FEM problem is divided into three levels:

Level 1- Understanding and Understanding Sources and Basic Management Systems

Level 2- Set baselines, goals, and track improvements

Level 3- Leading Ideal Practice

If the facility has not yet implemented Level 1 practices (unable to answer "yes" or "partially yes" in all rating questions), they will not be able to continue with Level 2 and Level3 practices. This ensures that the facility successfully completes Level 1 practice (basic requirement) before proceeding with more advanced practices.

Higg FEM 4.0 Scoring Method

The weights of levels are not the same. Higg FEM has a higher weight for Level 2 than other levels as issues within that level are driving key performance improvement measures, such as setting goals and tracking reductions.

Level 1 accounts for 25% of the total score of 100 points. (Unless applicability issues keep you at level 1, level 1 accounts for 100% of the total score)

Level 2 accounts for 50% of the total score of 100 points

Level 3 accounts for 25% of the total score of 100 points

The above score distribution is the same as in FEM 3.0. The difference between FEM 3.0 and FEM 4.0 is that each level in Higg FEM 4.0 scores at least one or more questions.

The weights of each part are equal

The Higg Facility Environment Module (Higg FEM) evaluates seven impact areas and scores them based on the performance of the facility in these areas:

Each section contains 100 points. The total score of Higg FEM is based on a probability of 100 points, so each section score accounts for an equal proportion of the total score of Higg FEM (14.3%).

If a certain part is not applicable to a facility (i.e. air emissions), the score for each part will be evenly redistributed to the remaining applicable parts. In this case, each section'sscore accounts for an equal portion of the total score allocated to Higg FEM (16.67%).

Calculate the score for each rating question

Based on your answers to each scoring question, you can earn points:

1. For each "yes" answer, you will receive a full score.

2. For each partial yes answer, you will receive half of the score.

3. For each "no or unknown" answer, you will receive zero points.

The problem score is evenly distributed among each level, depending on the number ofscoring questions available at a specific level. Therefore, the score for each question varies based on the number of scoring questions applicable to the facility.

An example is shown below:

In addition, additional scoring rules will be automatically implemented to award scores based on whether the facility has achieved its energy/water/waste goals and achievements.

Why did Cascale change the score in FEM 4.0?

Higg FEM 4.0 has redefined the industry environmental performance of the factory. Higg FEM 4.0 made changes to the evaluation, thereby resetting the scores. The changes are as follows:

1. Expand the coverage of environmental issues in the assessment.

2. Break down overly general questions into more detailed ones.

3. The improved applicability feature allows for answering relevant questions based solely on its operation and process.

4. Align assessments with key industry standards, including greenhouse gas agreements, science based target initiatives, and the ZDHC zero emission roadmap.

How to evaluate the results of Higg FEM validation?

Higg FEM is not a compliance audit, but encourages "continuous improvement". The verification results are not reflected as "passed" or "not passed", but only a score is reported, and the specific acceptable score is determined by the customer.
